Season 1, Supplemental 3: Gary on the West Highland Way

This “supplemental” is a fun one! I was recently a guest on the West Highland Way Race podcast, and they’ve agreed to let us repost that interview here!

The West Highland Way is a 95 mile footpath in Scotland, with about 13,000’ of vert, that runs from just outside of Glasgow, north and west to Fort William. Typically, hikers take a week or so to make the trek, but, a race run on this path for the 30-ish years. I had the privilege of participating in this race last year, and my experience was an intense one!

Long-time West Highland Way race participant and volunteer, and fixture in the Scottish ultra scene, John Kynaston, has hosted a podcast about the race for years, and he does a great job of walking me through the race. So, sit back, relax and enjoy John’s Scottish brogue and stories of an adventure in the highlands!

Season 1, Episode 7: Sabrina Little

“Normal people don’t eat breakfast at 7:00am!”

When our guest, Sabrina Little, said this with a fierce tone in her voice, she was revealing her “largely spartan” lifestyle.  For Sabrina, most of her miles come before the sun rises and if you haven’t worked out, ate breakfast, and left for a day of work before 7am, you aren’t a “normal” person. And furthermore, with wit and wisdom, she fully recognizes the “not normalcy” of that assessment!

We know you’re going to LOVE our conversation with the all out winner of last year’s Dallas BMW Ultra 50k, and Waco TNT 50k, as well as the second place overall finisher at the 2018 Rocky Raccoon 100 miler.  We talk training, transference, running as character development, and Sabrina opens up about some deep losses she has suffered in life and how they now form and fuel her life as a runner. Oh, and along with her fascination with teeth, she shares the best “bang for the buck” toothpaste on the market.

Season 1, Episode 6: D-Bo Only

NOTE: While this episode can definitely stand alone, it is in many ways a “part 2” to Episode 5. In that previous episode, Dylan and Harmony Bowman share insights into their lives, their relationship, their running, and also their struggles with health issues…both mental and physical. That episode marks Harmony’s first time on a podcast, too!

In this episode, after Harmony went back to work, Dylan and Gary go deep into all manner of ultra-marathon nerdiness, exploring Dylan’s early days and subsequent growth with the sport. D-Bo’s career, in many ways, mirrors the astronomical growth of ultra trail running, and they explore all kinds of topics, from specific races, to ultra-fueling, to how Dylan’s father-in-law’s piano playing parallels training, to D-Bo’s pacing mistakes with Joe Grant at Hardrock. It’s a deep, long, and rich conversation!

Season 1, Episode 5: D-Bo and Harm-O

Where do you go when your training falls apart?  We’re not talking about physically going somewhere.  Where do you go in your heart or your head or your relationships when injury or illness or the unexpected sets you back?  That’s the question we are exploring in this conversation with Dylan Bowman, aka D-Bo, and Harm-O, which is what D-Bo calls his wife, Harmony. Adorkable, right?!

While D-Bo is a seasoned podcast veteran, this episode marks Harmony’s first time in an interview, and we were thrilled to have her join in!

Also, this is essentially part one of a two-parter. Come back next week as Gary and Dylan go deep on his running, training and growth with the sport of ultra-running!

Season 1, Supplemental 1: Unabridged Zach Miller Conversation

What’s a “Supplemental”?
For us, Supplementals are going to be those things that don’t quite fit the (admittedly loose) definition of a full “Episode,” where all hosts are present, riffing on a topic or participating in a conversation or interview. Supplementals could be one of us sharing a story, reading a race report, providing some insight into a spiritual practice, or like today, the full, unabridged audio of a conversation.

In today’s first ever Supplemental, we’re releasing our full conversation with ultrarunner Zach Miller. Episode 1 featured essentially the second half of our conversation with Zach, and that’s due to the fact that when we arrived at Barr Camp, there was another hiker present, named Matt…so, when we started our conversation, it was mostly catching Matt up to speed on who Zach is and why we were there. And, incidentally we talk about some of Zach’s races, his interest in the Leadville 100 and the Run Rabbit Run 100, his passion for UTMB and more. If you’re an ultramarathon nerd like we are, you’ll love the deeper insight!

Thanks for joining us and we’d love to have you as an ongoing conversation partner. Please like and subscribe and follow and review and do all of the things!

Season 1, Episode 1: Finding Zach

On our first ever episode of the BidMe.Run podcast we kick things off with an adventure.  Hosts Gary Aronhalt and Karl Helvig make a trek up Pikes Peak to interview the show’s first guest, ultrarunner and all around really great guy Zach Miller.  Then, we join our third host, Joey Bearss, in the studio to discuss & debrief.

Thanks for joining us and we’d love to have you as an ongoing conversation partner.
